Camino de Santiago: Day 1

Today we started the Camino de Santiago. It has been absolutely beautiful so far. Leslie and I decided that we were going to go slow and steady, so we wouldn't ever really have to stop!  And we only stopped once, to have lunch.

The Camino is the famous trail that St. James took to Santiago and his remains and a beautiful Cathedral will be there when we finish.  Many Europeans and people around the world take this pilgrimage to Santiago.  I'd say the terrain is like the Appalachian trail, except the pilgrimage in full takes 5 weeks to hike and the Appalachian trail takes 3 months haha. We are just doing the last week of it.

We started in Sarria this morning when we arrived by train, and we hiked up to a monastery to get our first Pilgrim Passport stamp!  It was very cool. There was a sign to ring the doorbell and wait 2 minutes, so we did, and no one came!  We were with 2 other pilgrims who were.from Colorado & doing it by bike.  We rang it again and a man finally came and stamped us!

The Camino has been amazing so far. A lot of people seem to be German, maybe they're on holiday it something. Our bags ended up being incredibly heavy.. I mean walking 15 miles on hilly & rocky foothills of Spain, with an extra 25 lbs on your back.. anyone would have sore shoulders and feet by the end of the day...

We met a few people at the hostel tonight.. Fernando from Spain, Jessica from Peru, and Aaron from Mexico!  We went out to get a drink and now it's time for bed.. early start tomorrow!
